Christopher
Willes is an artist and music maker living in Canada. Through concerts,
exhibitions, performance and theatre projects his work explores an
ongoing interest in collaborative processes, interdisciplinary
activity, and various sound making practices. He studied music at the
University of Toronto and has participated in residencies at
the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta Canada, and STEIM
Foundation
in the Netherlands among others.
As a composer and musician he has shown work
at the Music Gallery and the Nuit Blanche Festival in Toronto, at the North
Sea Festival in The Netherlands, and he plays regularily in several creative music groups in Toronto and Montreal. An
exhibition of his work was shown at Labspace
Gallery
in the summer of 2009 which featured two installations working with both sound and images. Christopher has collaborated on the
creation of a number of group projects in performance and contemporary dance as
well, most notably having public works commissioned by Toronto's Nuit
Blanche Art Festival in both 2007 and 2008, performing at Toronto
Harbourfront Centre's next step series 09' and at Studio 303 in Montreal. In 2008
his collaboration with choreographer Brian Solomon was shown in the Toronto
Fringe Festival, and again in 2009 at Théâtre
du Nouvel-Ontario.
More recently he has worked with dancer/choreographer Julia Male for the
past two years giving music and advice on two of her solo dance performances, both of which were shown
at Tangente in Montreal.
In 2010 Christopher will be taking part in a
collaboration led by performance artist Myra Davies interpreting
Wagners "Der Ring
des Nibelungen" in collaboration with pianist Gregory
Oh and artist Lee Henderson at the X Avant Festival in Toronto. He has
also been commissioned by Nadina Mackie Jackson to write a new piece of
music for solo bassoon which will be presented in 2011.
He lives in Toronto and likes noodles.
